How to fix an aluminum storefront door with a continuous hinge
Aluminum storefront doors are installed on pivots 95% of the time, it takes about 2 to 4 years for pivots to go bad on a high traffic door. But when the pivots do go bad it’s not fun to change them. One of the best ways to fix this problem is to use a continues hinge instead of pivots. The continues hinge lasts longer, and just works really well.
First you should remove the door from the frame. You can take the screws out of the top pivot on the door side and if you lean the door out and pick it up off the bottom pin you can remove the door easily.
With a 4” side grinder you can cut off the part of the pivot that sticks out of the frame on the top and cut of the pin on the bottom.
Take the hinge out of the box but don’t through it away because there are self tapping screws in the box to install the door with.
Screw the full surface hinge to the frame of the door on the same side as the pivots 1/8” below the top of the frame were the door goes. Use the self taping counter sunk screws provided. the door should fall over and lay a flat bar or some shims on the threshold to make a gap at the bottom of the door and put the door back in the opening on top of the shims or flat bar.
Fold the hinge on top of the door and adjust the reveal on the top and the latch side of the door to an 3/16” . After you have adjusted the door to where you want it the box gives you some round headed self taping screws. Use these to secure the door to the hinge. This hinge also gets 3/8” thru bolts as well.
Typically these are 3/8” thrubolts and require a 3/8” drill bit. Drill out the large holes on the hinge and try to drill them straight through the door. Install the thru bolts and tighten them to a snug fit. Do not tighten them down so that they crush the door.
When you finish tightening the thru bolts, you’re ready to install the cover. Do not hit the face of the cover with anything including a rubber or metal hammer! To install the cover you place it on the hinge and hook the aluminum tab. Apply pressure with your hand to the face of the cover and tap the side of the cover with a hammer lightly. I hope this helped.
